How to Apply for Australian General Skilled Migration

The general skilled migration visas program includes Skilled Independent, State Sponsorship and Skilled Graduate visas. The program is driven by the demand of rare/wanted skills in Australia.

189 Visa – Skilled Independent (Permanent Visa)

This visa is by invitation only and is for skilled workers and New Zealand citizens with skills in demand, to live and work permanently anywhere in Australia.

This visa consists of two streams:

  • Points-tested stream, and
  • New Zealand stream.

The points-tested stream is designed for holders of occupations from the Skilled Occupations List that have been invited by the government to apply for the visa.

To receive the potential invitation the candidate must lodge an Expression of Interest via SkillSelect immigration system and score enough points (minimum 65). Note that for some occupations the number of points can be higher than 65.

The New Zealand stream is designed for eligible New Zealand citizens who have demonstrated commitment and contribution to Australia, have lived for at least last five years in Australia (must have started living here on or before 19 February 2016), and satisfy income requirement.

190 Visa – Skilled Nominated (Permanent Visa)

This visa is by invitation only and is for skilled workers with skills in demand in a particular state or territory, to live and work permanently in the state/territory that invited the candidate.

To receive the potential invitation the candidate must lodge an Expression of Interest via SkillSelect immigration system and score enough points (minimum 65). Note that for some occupations the number of points can be higher than 65.

485 Visa – Skilled Graduate (Temporary Visa)

A temporary visa that allows international students to live, study and work after conclusion of their studies.

It consists two different streams:

  • Graduate work stream, and
  • Post-Study work stream

The Graduate work stream is for overseas students which completed qualifications for an occupation included in the relevant skilled list. It allows the visa holder to live in Australia for a further one and a half years.

The Post-Study work stream is for overseas students that graduated with a degree (degrees) from an Australian educational institution.

This visa is for international students who have recently graduated with a degree from an Australian institution. It lets you live, work and study in Australia, temporarily. It allows the visa holder to live in Australia for a further two years.
